Fire of undetermined origi nauted approximately $5,000 dam age to the residence of Dr. H. G. Sandvoss on El Retiro Lane on Wednesday afternoon. Much of the loss was attributed to water dam age, although one of the elites at tealtles encountered by the fire men in fighting the blaze was the inadequate supply of water they were able to obla -Extensive FEpsIES have Besa und erway throughout the summer to the Sandvoss home and work was being done on Wednesday on the top floor of the building under the 00f where the fire started. None of the workmen, however, had any knowledge of how the blaze got tuider way but smoke was ob served pouring out of the north ast corner of the residence by policemen at Memorial Park who were cleaning up after their an nual barbecue for the children of t he village .An alarm was turned in and the Irvington pamper and a hose cart responded, the latter on a second alarm. It was soon found that the hydrants on El Retiro and Dows Cones which are on a private water main three quarters of century old could deliver only 2 Teickle of water and a call to Tar rytown was made for a pumper and also to Dobbs Ferry for a ladder ruck, the Irvington ladder truck having been out of service for no days undergoing minor repairs. However once the village pumper hooked onto a hydrant on the elementary school grounds, connected directly to the village ‘water system, the need for the ‘out of town pumper vanished, al though the Dobbs Ferry ladder truck was needed. It was a fire that caused a monumental trafic tie-up on Broadway for a time, due in part to the fact that the Tarrylows pumper truck was drawing water from a hydrant at Broadway and Dows Lane which limited traffic to two lanes, with a third lane packed with parked cars, while thelr occupants were at the scene of the blaze. ‘The Sandvoss house was occu pied In the 1850s and through the arly 2000s by the family of D. N. Howan, Itier became the prop erty of Mrs. Annie Bédison Farse. + Dr. Sandvoss has lived in it for seven of eight years.
