Four Men Jailed at Beaumont in Con nection With it. Beaumont, Texas, August 22.—The Port Arthur troubles have caused a great deal of discussion here. Four ar rests were made last night and the men are now in jail here. A special correspondent talked to one of the negroes this morning in regard to the affair and found that he had actually run from Port Arthur to Nederland. At first he was not in clined to talk for fear the men there would get hold of him here and finish him up. He said that when the trou ble came up he was in a crowd of his color; he had finished his work in the city with his employer, who is a prominent business man here, who had him there to help him with his work for the day, when the shots began thickening up around him. He felt two whiz by his ear and he began run ning. The men started after him and it was a foot race from Port Arthur to Nederland, a distance of eight miles or more. He is still a badly scared man, but will talk to the officers now and the probabilities are that all of the gang that were in the party will be placed in jail and if the wounded negro dies they will all have a trial under a charge of murder. The citizens of Port Arthur who have been there some time disapprove of the anti-negro demonstration in the strongest terms. They say that every man so far found to have been im plicated comes from the North, a ma jority of them from Chicago and sur rounding cities. Sheriff Landry has the matter well in hand and will do his best to get the real culprits.
