J. W. Johnson, who formally organized the congregation of five or six members in 1844. A young minister, the Rev. Mr. Johnson met Adam M. Tool first settler In the community as he was on his way to mill at Brighton and asked If he thought the people in his neighbor hood would like to have some one preach among them. Mr. Tool re plied in the affirmative and soon after, services were held In his home with the congregation com posed of Mrs. Susan A. Tool, Mr and Mrs. Washington Fleener an( Mr. and Mrs. David Worth.Early PastorsThe following spring a two days meeting was held and about that time James A. Tool and his sister Mrs. Hill, joined the class. The membership remained stationary until the winter of 1849-50 during which a revival was held at the school house with probably theRev. J. Q. Hammong in charge.Then the membership wras increased to stxteeri. Pastors in subsequent jears until and including _856 were; the Reverends Gibson lanson. Raynor. Kirkpatrick. Joseph Hall. J. B. Allender and E. M. H. Fleming.In 1856 a house of worship was erected, a frame structure, thirty by forty feet in size, which cost about $1,700 This original building Is still standing and Is occupied by Mrs. Glover Shannon. At this time there were about seventy-five metn her s.Other early pastors were the Reverends Bussey. E. Wood, A. I auback. -during whose pastorate the membership reached the' one hundred mark—also the Reverends C. W. Shaw. B. Holland, F. M Slusser. George Clamer, T. McKay Stuart and D. Mclntrye.Present Church Built In 1874The Rev. D. McIntyre held the charge in 1874 when the present church edifice was erected with a vestibule and bell tower at a cost of about $5,000. The congregation also owns a parsonage in Monroe.The Rev. George Pennington is pastor of the church, having come to Monroe from Westchester, la., in June. 1942. The Rev. and Mra.
