Methodist Church To Celebrate 100th Year _tBasket Dinner, Birthday Party To Follow Sunday Morning ServiceMONROE—In the spring of 1943 just a century ago, upon agreement with the Indians the government opened territories in this area for settlement. As word of the new opportunities circulated, pioneer settlers began to arrive, some traveling by foot, to make their homes in the vicinity of what Is now known as the town of Monroe, earlier platted “Tool’s Point.'*Those same pioneers, undaunted by the trials and tribulations, set eagerly about to make for themselves and their prosperity an honorable place In which to live.Oldest In County Toward this end, they met inhumble settings for religious worship during that first year. Thus was the origin of the present Mon roe Methodist church, which is officially recorded as the oldest church In Jasper county, and the oldest church of the Des Moines Methodist conference.In commemoration of this date a celebration will be held at the church Sunday, Aug. 29, at which Bishop J. Ralph Magee of Des Moines will be the guest speaker at the 11 o'clock morning worship. Special music arranged will Include vocal solos by Martha Kane and Albert Peterson.Afternoon Program At 2 o’clock, following a basket dinner, the one-hundredth birthday party will be held *t which visiting delegations from the county, and other officials will extend greet-(Continued on Page 1}
