COMRADE KURTZ OF JAMESTOWN G. A. R. PASSES AWAY SAT.Former Port and Departmental Commander and Prominent Jamestown Citizen Dies Following Brief IllnessFComrade George VV. Kurtz, Known to his host of friends in the city and state as Col. Ceo. Kurtz, passed away III about four o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Trinity hospital follow-inga brief illness. Mr. Kurtz was ! taken ill while with a fishing party j is | at Spiritwood Lake last Wednesday | afternoon. He was brought home i Immediately and was placed under j the care of a physician, being taken , to the hospital Saturday morning to undergo an operation as the last j moans of prolonging his life. It is si thot that he may have suffered in- j ti ternal injuries as the result of an | r4 auto accident which occurred in i„ Florida last winter. | clt;• Mr. Kurtz was seventy-three years : |0 of age, having been born at Coblenz. I |MHGermany, December 2, 1846. Hewas brought to America by his parents when he was but eight years of age, his parents moving to Mayville. Wisconsin. February 22, 1875 he married Miss Dora Ralfe at Holstein. Wisconsin and settled at Gree“ Bay. For the next five years he engaged in the Implement business at the latte rplace.Mr. Kurtz moved to Dakota Territory in 1879, going into the implement business here with Lyons and Winslow. Mrs. Kurtz followed her husband to Jamestown the next year and they have since made their home In Stutsman county. Mr. Kurtz took up a homestead about sixteen miles north of the city within about three miles of what is now the town of Buchanan a short time afterward. Leaving the farm after several years residence there, Mr. Kurtz engagd in the imiplment business here, retiring about ten years ago.The deceased leaves aside from his widow, four sons and two daughters, one son, Albert Kurtz of Glen Ulin, Minn., having died about twelve years ago. The sons are-John Kurtz of Buchanan, George Kurtz of Weyburn. Canada. Kdward Kurtz of Schafer, N. D. and Leonard Kurtz of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The' daughters are Mrs. Dehne of Pln-gree, N. D. and Caroline Kurtz of Jamestown. The latter was the only t jf-one. present at the time of Mr. i w Kutrz’s' deith but all hre expected I si to be In attendance at the funeral C£ services. I jj Wisconsin, and Mrs. August Fred- J icks of Appleton, Wisconsin, and riJ three half brothers, Louis and Walt-er Kurtz of Mayville and Robert Kurtz of Merrill, Wisconsin. The brothers and sisters are also expected at the funeral services.Prominent in (1. A. It.Mr. Kurtz was a prominent member of the Fort Seward Post No. S of the Grand Army of the Republic, being a former commander of 'he post. In 1912 he' was department commander if the Vorth Dakota State G, A. R. He enlisted at the n- I age of fifteen years as a drummer boy with the Third Wisconsin regiment and later reenlisted in the Fiftieth Wisconsin. He was seventeen years of age at the time of his second enlistment.Following the Civil War. and as a member of the Fiftieth Wisconsin Regiment, 'Mr. Kurtz made the trip from Kansas City to Fort Rice and later to Bismarck in the campaign of 1863 against the Indians. A part of this trip was made by boat, llie troops marching a great part of the way.Funeral Wednesday The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at Hie Elks hall, the locaf Elks lodge having full charge. • The Fort Seward Post N'o. 8 of the G. A. R., under the direction of Post Commander Christian Schmitz, took charge of the cervico at the Highland Home cemetery.N
