A crook named “Doc” Holliday is the man who did the shooting It was all about $5.00, borrowed from Alien, and the latter said if Holliday wouldn’t pay him by a certain time, he would be “done up.” The time came, and Holliday armed himself with a shooting iron. Allen saw his man going into a place, and followed him. The Democrat best decribes it as follows:As Allen stepped across the threshold Holliday suddenly elevated his pistol and fired; The ball struck him below the muscle of the right arm, passing through the arm, emerging near the shoulder and shattering the upper light of the folding door. Allen at once fell, uttering a loud scream, and Holliday, rushing behind the cigar case, leaned over it and fired again. The bullet missed the prostrate man’s head by a hair’s breadth and buried itself in the door sill. At this juncture Henry Kel-lerman, oue of the bar tenders, rushed forward and seized the weapon. His courage undoubtedly prevented a killing.Almost at the same moment Captain Ed Bradbury, who was just outside, ran in and disarmed Holliday. Friends of Allen at once grouped about him and he was taken in a hack to his home on East Fifth street by Mr Allen, his employer, Holliday was hurried to jail and put at once behind the bars.At last accounts the wounded man was alive. The Democrat, in referring to him, says: “William Allen .was born in Freeport, Illinois, in 1859. He went 6b the Leadville police force in 1S80 and soon became recognized as one of the bravest and moat gallant officers. About a year ago he became special policeman at the H rand Central, afterward held the same position at the Monarch saloon, and finally became bar tender there. He was thrice wounded in the city service. The first time he was shot through the groin in a fearless attempt to arrest the fiend Bakewell, who murdered two policemen. Later he was shot in the leg by a man who resisted arffeat on Chestnut street. His last wounds were inflicted in the notorious “Cat alley” on State street, where he had foliowd'a burglar. The miscreant turned and shot him through the chest, also stabbing him. The wounds were serious, but owing to a spleudid constitution, he was soon on duty again.
