Washington-Annapolis Highway is DiscussedA delegation made up of prominent citizens of Southern Maryland, representing Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties, appeared Saturday before the State Koads Commission in advocacy of the national defense highway, connecting Annapolis and Wash ingiou.A plan to fiuance construction of the highway through utilization by the State of its first two annual appropriations from the $600,000 apportionment to Maryland by the Federal Government under the State-aid road plan, was presented. The Maryland share of total cost of the road, which is estimated at $250,000, has already been provid ed by a contingent $125,000 appropriation by the last General Assembly.Patriotic citizens of Prince George’s county are ready to do their part toward construction of the defense highway by a contribution of gravel from local pits to cover at least 15 miles of the highway.The olfer of^ thousands of tons of gravel for construction work was made turough Father Hogan, rector of the Catholic parish of White Marsh, near where the large gravel pits are located-Father Hogan informed the commission that his parishioners stood ready to contribute sufficient stone for one stretch of 10 miles, and that Vincent Gross aDd other local citizens would contribute another supply for an additional five miles, and perhaps to cover the entire route. These contributions will, of course, materially cut down the construction cost if the commission should decide to ipake the highway of gravel instead of inacudenj orconcrete.C- C. Magruder, Clerk of the Cour of Appeals, headed the delegation; and made the main argument. He waa followed by Senator William F. Holmead. Senator Duvall, of Anne Arundel; Jackscn H- Kalstou, OliverS. Metzerott, Thomas P. Littlepage, T. Howard Duckett, Josepn D. Addison, Elrjdge D. Jordan, and Father Hogan. The arguments of each speaker were simijar.Under the plan presented the highway to be constructed would only cover 23 miles, and would not run direct t.» either Washington or Annapolis. Instead, the plan provides for constructs n from Camp Parole, in Anne Arundel county, to Bladensburg. the high way connecting with Annapolis at the former point by tapning the Baltimore-Annapolis boulevard aod with Washington by tapping the Baltimore Washington boulevard at Bladensburg.
