(Special to The World.) NEWPORT, R. L, Aug. 24.—Strong winds, high seas and torrents of rain possessed no terrors or discomforts for Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr., today. It was the last of the series of races be tween the famous 70-footers for the $1,000 cup offered by the Newport Yacht Racing Association, and she did what she could as a mascot to help her hus band's Rainbow win. But Juck knows no gallantry and is blind to the eternal fitness of things, and it was the Mineola, of August Bel mont, which won the race. With Mrs. Vanderbilt as guests were Mrs. Stuyvesant fish and Marquis de la Sandera. It was Mrs. Fish's first yacht ing experience, and although the tie seventy was much teased about, and she had not a dry thread on her at the close of the race, she clapped her dripping hands and said, “Isn't it fine; I just love itt' When she went aboard she was hand samely gowned in an exquisite Paris creation, with a hat to match that was a dream of the milliner's art. But when she came ashore the dress clung to her emply and the flowers had made many gyrations and were a shapeless, soaking masa. Mrs Vanderbilt, as soon as she stepped on deck, secured one of the crew's sweaters, and in a few minutes the weather appeared to be the least of her troubles. She made a charming picture in the rough costume of a sailor, and was oblivious of the pitching and roiling of the Rainbow, so utterly absorbed was she in the prostess of the race. She was greatly disappointed in the result, as it was the first time the Rainbow has failed to win when she was aboard. Yankee Will Get Cup. It now looks as if the Yankee would get the cup, as she secured second place today and finishes with eleven points to her credit, while Mineola has ten. The protest may affect the stand ing some and necessitate another race, but as it is now the cup goes to the Yankee. It was an English professional pitted against an American amateur, and Tierman B. Duryea, the father of the class, won the results very pratify ing to pociery people, and to-night there is great rejoicing at the clubs. _ To-day’s race was one of the best of the series and was sailed in a strong ‘southerly wind and a high sea. When the yachts got out to the Hrhtship it was blowing a gale and squally, and it was raining hard. Just before the start the Virginia's club topsail came down with a rush while it was being set, but no one was hurt. A working topsail was set in Its place, while the other yachly carried No. 1 club topsails. over the Triangular Course. The course selected was the triangular, the first leg being to windward. The starting signal was made at 11.55, and the Mineola and Rainbow crossed al most together, the former leading by two seconds, but the latter to windward. The Virginia crossed next, while the Yankee brought up the rear, over four minutes behind the leaders. It was so rough that the big boats threw water all over, but they sailed a clipping gait and they made only a cou ple of tacks when Yankee wenthered the rainbow and at the outer mark was fifty-five seconds ahead of her.The Virginia and Yankee overstood the mark and lost a lite. It was a run to the second mark, but no asapinnakers were put on, and a reach to the Hght ship, the time of the first round being as follows. After rounding the lightship the Vir gina tried to shift topsails, but failed and withdrew from the race. The others continued on, and the second time on the’wilnd the Yankee made prand time and pointed up so high that she gained materially, and at the outer mark was a good second on actual sailing. After rounding the yachts set spinnakers, gybing over to starboard. The position of the yachts did not change, but the Rainbow and Yankee were so close that al interest was cen tred in them; but on the read to the finish one the Yankee gained on the Rainbow and took one point, which gave her the cup.
