A MONUMENT TO LIEUT. SHIPP.The only North Carolina soldier killed iu tlie recent war was Lieutenant William E. Shipp, of the Tenth Cavalry.Worth Bagiev, of the Navy, diedo • t»heroically, ami a monument is to be erected to his memory. It is well so. North Carolina has too few monuments. In all wars she furnishes the lighters, while other States furnish the generals. It is becoming that a memorial be erected to Worth Bagiev, of then ■Navy. It is equally proper that onelie erected to William Shipp, of theArmy—two Carolinians who laiddown their lives at their eoijutrv's%call.Young Shipp was of those who, foremost lighting, fell. Beautiful to look at; game as became a soldier; a gentleman bv inheritance and living up to his history; the husband of a young and beautiful wife; the father of two young children—what could have been more pathetic than his death ?He well deserves a monument, and the Observer herewith opens a subscription to a fund for such purpose:The Charlotte Observer......$100.00Additions to this fund are respectfully invited. The Observer will receive and receipt for subscriptions, and iu a dav or two it will take the liberty of• mindicating certain geutlemen in different towns of the State who will be asked to take subscriptions to this Shipp monument fund.—Charlotte Observer.
