Couprvinia, Aug. 18, 1883, Eprron Mat.:—Harvesting has now fairly commenced, and the next two months will be a busy time for the farmers. Coupeville, like the balance of the Sound country, is feeling the thrill caused by immigration. The town site boilers have no land for specu lators, but those wishing to locate can get lots reasonable. Mr. Hull, the architect, has the residences of Messrs. J. A. Leach and ©. Dyer about completed, and will soon commence one for himself. Since the arrival of the pile-driver Mr. John Robertson's wharf is pro gressing rapidly toward deep water. The lower story of our Court House has been partitioned off into office rooms. An interesting case came off be fore the Justice of the Peace yester day, the question at issue being the payment or non-payment of a note of Land. The plaintiff was a Seat tle trader and the defendant one of our farmers. ‘There was two of Se attle’s legal rights present to dispense Blackstone, and there being no evi dence except that of the plaintiff and defendant, who swore point-blank against each other, it devolved upon the lawyers to convince the Judge which was the greatest liar. I hear today that the defendant had to pay the costs. Our island has sustained consider able injury through speculators dur ing the last few years. The Lake Superior Puget Sound Land Co., together with the Hackney estate, control about 80,000 acres on which they do not even pay taxes, thereby throwing the burden of the county's support on the residents. People have not sufficient faith in a tax title to pay the delinquent taxes for one. The L. 8. P. 8. L. Co.'s land is now in the hands of the Northern Pacific Railroad Co., and they cer tainly should feel sufficient interest in the development of the country to py the taxes on thin land, or quit 6 to parties that will. If they are bouting for terminal purposes they won't frighten us any more by pay ing their taxes. Truscum.
