Mr. Brown waa the oldest clergyman of hia denomination iu the colony, having been ordained to the pastorate of a Presbyterian church in Ha wioli, Scotland, so far back aa the year 1824. He arrived iu IBM, and formed the Presbvloriuu congregation in Hawthorn, of which be waa shortly afterwards ordained miniatcr. Mr. Browu waa a member of tho Council of the University of Glaagow. He iu many year, ago moderator of tho Relief Sayod before the uuiou of the Preabyterian churcbe# in Scot-land, and waa elected in Victoria to tke same distinguialied poaition aa tbe clerical head of tho Preabyterian Church. Mr. Brown waa alao for a considerable period editor of the Christian Journal, a recognised organ of tho United Preabyterian Church of Scotland. After hia arrival here be undertook tbe duties of professor of Greek and Hebrew and of oxegeticil theology to tbe students of the Prc»-byterian Church. Hia valuable services in this capacity wore formally recognised by the Presbyterian Assembly. In January last Mr. Brown waa compelled to relinquish active clerical duty.
