Fears resurgence of neo-Nazi groupContinued from B1*“He (I/)ckhart) was there talkingto one of the accused...helping him out” says Loewen. Lockhart says he has no direct ties with any of the accused and only showed up to make sure they got a fair trial.Loewen is fearful that the collapse of the murder case could spark a resurgence in the neo-Nazi movement, similar to what was seen after the 1992 hate-mongering case.News of the dropped charges have already been posted on the ECDL’s Web site.“Lockhart is very clever and he knows how to get his message out,”says Loewen.Cyberspace has proved to be a valuable tool for the racist movement, says Lyle Smordin, national president of B’Nai Brith Canada.“It’s changed things for the worse,” says Smordin. “Before, they were stuck handing out pamphlets. Now they can easily disseminate information worldwide and they can rope people in with their subliminal messages.”But some things haven’t changed. The formation of the KKK in 1865 in Tennessee, was in part due to anger among southerners over the poverty and hunger that followed the Civil War.Today, economic unrest still is the primary fuel for the racist movement, says Lethbridge.“Resentment increases as the economy falters,” says Lethbridge. And there’s plenty of resentment around.“Chronic underemployment and unemployment among youth is at levels that are higher than the Great Depression,” he says. “It’s a fertile soil.’What will eventually be reaped is difficult to know.“We do not in this country have a well-financed, well-staffed organization to monitor these groups,” says Lethbridge.rn« Ifmw fau ttopfcf*orfclt; Q»tlom tfnttlmy Wlinluwmlra to the «« the Kh Mi** KWu -* ........ — •• ’ .... — ■■mi i1------An Introduction to the Knights of the Ku Ktux KlanHis* r****. lt;h .r*lt; **** ».o». mt* '''fa*.**/*. ?*«£«*w * m. ***. v ******** u*. *** v **.«*» r;**%» *:YfMf.Ofttfc.»«»:.: *tf w iftt lt;-«««* UZ «i»x *m •iyy blt;*w»ks* 4 Use Ww ifct :)x »Av lt;«-» «. - W**f U A«MJiN* i 'TU Sxlt;oi*r**Kx i‘w« 'ft* w*.
