: JOHNS WINS BURCH RUTH RACE AT STATELINESquirt Johns successfully defended his 1959 triumph in the 50-lap Burch-Ruth Trophy race Saturday evening at the Stateline Speedway, and the Brockway ace will now permanently retire the four-foot winning trophy. Johns racedacross the finishline with Hyle Russell of Kane on his tail, followed by Bot Schnars of Busti, Jim Pollaro of Jamestown, and Sam LaMancuso also of Jamestown.The thrilling event, witnessed by about 2000 spectators, had to be restarted a number of times due to the over-enthusiasm of the drivers as they piled up numerous times on the turns. On the 33rd lap Johns took over the lead after Woody McCracken had piled up on the fourth turn, and from the 40th lap to the finish of the feature it was a battle between Johns and Russell.Heat winners on the Saturday evening card were Gil Lathrop of Kane, John Seeley, and Squirt Johns. Semi-final victories were copped by Chuck Piazza and Kenny Johnson. Jim Scott of Grand Valley snared the runner-up spot in the first semi-final run.This Saturday the regular racing card will be followed with events slated to begin at 8:30 p.m. The 100-lap Grand Championship Race of the season will be held die following Saturday, September 3.
