CARBONADO.A Few Facts Concerning the Old Mines Recently Abandoned.Carbonado, a mining camp northeast of the olfcy, has been abandoned and there will be no more work done from the old shafts and slopes, The miners an moving to other camps, the store will in time olose and what was once a busy and thrifty patch” will soon be a deserted village.Carbonado was started about seven years ago when the land owned and mined by the old Excelsior Coal oom-pany, south of the city aboat 3 miles, played oat and was abandoned. Old Exoelslor was moved from Its former looatlon to the present site at Carbonado, during the suparintendency of B. Wight man. One shaft was pat down and It was thought that the field was almost inexhaustible. A b witch nearly three miles In length was built from the Iowa Central from a point now known as Carbon Junction, A connecting switch was also built to the Rook Island, a short distance to the south. But Carbonado has not proven the bon ansa that the operators and the miners had predicted. A second shaft was put down and afterwards two ■lopes were operated. Baring the latter part of the life of the mine it was owned and operated by W. C, P. M. Sheppard and Geo. Ramsey and under the superIntendeuoy of Q. M. Holmes.
