Since I began with Preservation of Wilson (POW), I have noticed confusion with the public on what POW is all about and how we relate to the City of Wilson Historic Preservation Commis sion (HPC). Today I would like to share with you the dif ference between these two completely separate organizations. POW’s basic mission is marketing and sell ing real estate in our historic neighborhoods to owner-occupied buy ers. We do this by ac cepting property dona tions or placing Options to Purchase on homes. This will then give us an inventory that we will market to preservation minded buyers reaching out to the Raleigh area and beyond. After a house is sold, it then goes before HPC for approval of any ex terior work that will be done. Authorized by the NC General Statutes, the HPC is a regulatory board and works under design guidelines, based on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Rehabili tation, that were adopted locally. HPC is not in the busi ness of marketing and selling like we are. With each property that is sold, more renovation work will be done, and HPC will have more ap plications to review. POW is an advocate for historic preservation and will work to restore pride in our residential historic districts. We will take a leadership role in helping to better under stand the economic value of preservation and at the same time, the rules and regulations set forth by the HPC. This is a grassroots effort and we need full support in order to succeed. Please give me a Call at 234-7694 to learn more. Thanks, Kathryn Ferrari Bethune Executive Director Preservation of Wilson
