Questions or comments of general interest will be published in this forum.Q. It has been brought to my attention that convicted pedophiles and other convicts have been working on this base. Why are they allowed here and is it going to take another missing child to get something done?A. I understand and share your concern for the safety of our children, and you are obviously referring to reports in the local press on the Adam Finch case. I do not want to comment on the particulars of that case at this time, but I do want to address your concerns about base security. First, I believe you have been misinformed to some degree. At one time, we employed prisoners at Tyndall to do grounds maintenance. We stopped that practice two years ago. We do background checks on contractor and NAF employees who will be working around classified material, with child care, or with people under age 18, with funds, or who will be employed in housekeeping jobs. In addition, the government requires that a contractor neither hire, nor attempt to employ on a government contract, an individual who has any outstanding wants or warrants on file. The government also prohibits a contractor from using an employee currently serving a sentence in a federal, state or local facility. To my knowledge, none of the contractors at Tyndall have violated these restrictions. We regularly review and exercise base security and entry procedures to ensure we’re doing business the right way. Tyndall is a closed base, and all personnel entering the installation, including contractors who work on base and the many business people who need access to the base, are required to show proper identification. Nevertheless, despite every practical precaution, there is always the possibility that someone may enter the base who poses a danger to our residents. Additionally, only one of our five housing areas is inside the closed portion of our base. While residents of Wood Manor can rightfully feel some greater degree of security from living inside a closed base, we all need to take the same prudent measures for the security and safety of our possessions and families that we would take off base.Again, I share the concerns you have raised. In response to the recent disappearance of Adam Finch, I have directed a complete review of our employee/contractor screening and base access procedures, and the Security Police are currently seeking authorization to conduct spot background checks on personnel with access to Tyndall. Notwithstanding all the precautions we can take, there will always be risks, and all of us must stay alert and report suspicious activity to the Security Police, just as we would if we lived off base.
