A Large Collection of Title Deeds in The Helena Land Office. Patents for lands, both agricultural and mineral—five drawers full of them—lie In Helena, and will remain there, patiently waiting for their own ers to call for them, until they are de stroyed by age or are filed away in the records of the department says the Helena Record. Many of the per sons whose names appear on the deeds are dead and buried, but their heira, by proper showing, can obtain then. Harely are old patents called for. Possibly two or three a year are sent out in response to a communication from the owner, who, probably in tending to sell the land, lacks the pat ent as the last missing link to his chain of title. There are a number of reasons which can be assigned for this negli gence in calling for patents. A home stead is not subject to taxation until final proof is made, and the land re corded In the recorder's office of the county In which the land is situated. A number of years ago the county as sessors, in making out their assess ment list, obtained lists of all lands re corded in the county from the record ers’ offices. Thus the rancher thought that if he did not obtain his final proof all land would not be recorded in the county, and he would thus escape pay ing taxes on it. At present, however, and, in fact, for a number of years, this has been entirely changed. The assessors throughout the state now send to the federal land offices and ob tain lists of all taxable lands. Thus no one Ja overlooked in making up the assessment rolls. The first men to ascend Mt. Blanc were Balmat and Paccard, in 178¢. They gained the prize offered twenty six years before by Saussure for so doing. At present an average of fifty parties climb It annually.
