Two new buildings toon Kent State campusKent State s rapidly changing for Portage Drive directly across skyline will have at least twomajor additions in the next two years.The first will be a new school of art building which will be on Portage Drive near the old ROTC buildings. Designed to be a tri-levei structure, the art building will be attached to Van Deusen hall on the east side*Although still in final design stages, construction should begin around January of next year. Gae P. Russo, university architect, says that it will be at least 18 months before the building is finished.Costing around $2 million, the art department’s new headquarters will have 65,000 square feet of space. Architects are Ross, Yamone, and Manggrum of Cleveland. The John Andrews firm of Toronto is the consulting agency.The new school of business building will be another important project in KSU’s construction scheme* Plannedfrom Satterfield Hall, the business complex will feature tiered lecture rooms and administrative offices for the business school.Designed to be built into the sloping hill west of Portage Drive, the three story structure will have an entrance from the parking lot on top of the hill.With 68,000 square feet ofLibrary closes August 28Services in Rockwell library will cease August 28 until the opening of the new building September 14.Those anticipating needs for services during the period, August 28 to September 14, should contact the director’s office at 672-2962.All branch libraries will retain normal hours during the period the main library is closed.appear horizonroom, the business building will cost around $3.1 million.Because of its location on Portage Drive near Summit St., this building will be well suited for evening students and part-time students, according to Russo. Students will be able to park near the building, particularly in the evening.Both the art and business buildings are part of a long-range university plan initiated in 1965. Future designs call for two pedestrian malls—the Eastway and Midway Malls.Eastway will be in the area of the new library and the university center which is scheduled for completion in 1972.Midway Mall will run north along Library Drive with new buildings planned for the east side of the mall.Also included in the building forecast are two new “green areas.” One commons will be at the present dump between the towers dormitoty area and the tennis courts. Another proposed park area will be east of the new science buildings along Summit Street.Commenting on the trends in university construction here and on other campuses, Russo says that “architects are striving for a close, working arrangements between buildings.”
