Some seasons hundreds of such birds may be seen in isolated ponds where they are not molested. They are not generally found fn Urge numbers along wooded streams. Still many such birds may be seen along the Dee Moines river even within the city limits ofEstberville.Uofwle:horMlai-h.attolita.apigrdo-ilsAn early morning stroll along the river banks at Esthervllle revealed several splendid specimens of the great blue heron. An adult blue heron stands four feet high and wben on the wing and gracefully circling over * pond Is a grand and impressive sight and surpassed only by the eagle. They can be better observed along the river perhaps than on a pond as closer approach can be made. And here they make no less an impressive sight when after circlingabove the woods they come with stately and measured beats and soar down between the tall overhanging trees of the river banks and alight near a sandbar.Fi rler last petit at H tire rierund«sectiatrorVlt;mom at tl T1 Miss Tuei MfamiEmustroiJcwithHar!MDuffat tlMweelRos€MHanpitaltherli-Qfer!T-lt-to6dIS.UrIv-;e-J0-enig-le-*reerlieLD-elrA small colony of little green herons was seen and several solitary individuals were observed. The green heron delights In tree lined shores of muddy ponds and sluggish streams especially if itcad perch on some dead limb or tree protruding from the muddy hank. While it looks rather faded at this time of the year, the lustrous green and red of its breeding plumage makes this one of the most beautiful of herons. On a rock sat a lone American bittern sunning itself but when aware of the intruder it uttered Its usual disgusted squawk and clumsily took to its wings. Solitary sandpipers are common and one spitted sand pipe was seen. These often nest along the river banks during the summer. Adding color and the right atmosphere to a river or shore stroll several kingfishers were busily engaged in their sport, or perhaps In their case it is less a sport than an occupation.BUPIwarlt;MthebomMlastwauMassli
