Official Paper of Marshall CountyThe Bemidji brewery which was closed by the Indian lid in 1014 will soon be reopened as a potato flour mill with a capacity of 7,200 pounds of potato flour daily. A movement has also been started in East Grand Forks to establish a potato flour mill in the Hamm Brewery building in that city. Thus will the old buildings that were used in conducting a business now outlawed, finally serve a useful purpose.The Passing of the Saloons.With the closing of the saloons in Red Lake county, the whole northern part of the state from Little Falls to the Canadian boundary becomes dry territory. One can travel for hundreds of miles in the state and pass thru dozens of towns without seeing the sign of a liquor saloon. How different this is from what it was only a few years ago! The liquor ridden towns along the Minnesota side of the Rod River have been cleaned out. And with the passing lt;»f the saloons conditions have improved in all towns. We all remember how things used to be 011 a rainy day during harvesting and threshingwith four or five saloons running wide open tlt; rake in the laboring men's hard earned dollars. Now the farm hand comes to town and returns home as clear minded and able bodied as he came. No time is wasted for him or his employer in a debauch.With the passing of the saloon its power and influence in political and social matters also passes. Who does not remember when the liquor business had to he reckoned with in all elections? It often made and unmade officials at will. That day has gone never to return, we believe. It is only a question of time when the whole state will he dry. If the friends of temperance do their duty at the fall election, fho dry amendment will carry and the saloons will be banished from the entire state.
