go 6 miles across the lake by boat. The Villiage lies along the shore high and dry and extends about one half mile. There are eight houses (so called) only two however are tit to live in. All are dark and filthy, no light or ventilation except when the door Is open. Beds are benches built atound the walls. Most of the houses have earth floors. The cooking is usually done by open fires out doors. Foodconsists principally of flsh and game. (They were having a porcupine stewfor dinner the day we were there.) There are 40 people in the villiage, 21 adults, 5 below school age, and 14 of school age for whom the school board of the district have just built a neat school house, and installed a white female teacher. School was in session with 10 children in attendance, and the teacher said the others would be there in a few days. Of the adults most of them were of advanced age. One of the adults was wholly blind, 2 had Tracoma(an infectious sore eye) one helpless from rheumatism, one with tuberculosis of the lungs. Of the children 4 were blind in one eye from cataract, 2 had traucoma, one had a festula (running sore) under the jaw from a neglected tooth. The woman with tubercolosis has a puny child about three months old, it will probably die. As to visible means of support I saw two old fishing boats. Nothing growing except six puny tomato plants. They have a good spring well on the shore of the lake.In regard to the care of these people, I would suggest that the supervisor of Watersmeet township bemade dep. commissioner of the poor for that end, with power to employ a physician, local if possible, either on salary or otherwise as you may see fit. Your physician of the poor in the present district is now at Wakelield and he cannot visit these people in less than two davs unless he spends the night with them. I spoke to him about it and he said it is out of the question on his present salary.Kespectfully yoursGeo E. Moore, M. D.Moved bv Mr. Markstrum suDDort-
