MADISON DAVIS, WELL KNOWN NEGRO PASSED AWAY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.Madison Davis, better known as “Matt | Clarke county, and served two terms as Davis,” died yesterday afternoon at o :30 poitmaster of this city.o'clock. As stated by The Banner several days ago, he had a stroke of paralyses, which resalted in his death.No negro ever lived in Georgia who was more greatly loved by his white ac quaintances, than Matt, lie has always been the friend of the white man with whom he has been associated. Immediate ly after the Civil war, dnring the reconstruction period, Matt Davisdidas much as any other negro liviug in this state to keep down feelings of prejadice and strife between his friends of the two races. On account of his integrity and his loyalty to his friends Matt was twiceMatt Davis_was seventy-odd years of age. Daring the period of slavery in the Soath he belonged to Mr. Edward R. Hodgson, father of Messrs. A. H., E. R and J. M. Hodgson of this oity, and for a number of years was foreman of Mr. Hodgson’s wheelwright and blacksmith shop in Athens which was located where the Klein «k Martin shops are now situated.The death of no negro in Clarke county would cause the regret among tl e white people of the county that the death of Matt Davis will. His remains will be buried Friday morning at 10 ;3oelected to the Georgia legislature from (o’clock.
