much desired applause.The special sessiou of the county commissioners for the examination of the various petitions for and against removal of the county seat was ended last Wednesday and tiie work of revision concluded. The result was, as expected in our last issue, favorable to New Ulm and virtually settles the matter. After thoroughly revising and correcting the petition for removal tho, number of its signatures,fll923, was reduced to to 1422, putting it below a majority of the vote at the last general election whereas it should have held 60 per cent. The New Ulm remonstrance has a clear majority of the present voting population of 500 and how Sleepy Eye under any circumstances can hope for 55 per cent at an election seems not only improbable but decidedly impos-ible. Wo are therefore inclined to tjljnk that the matter will be dropped. In regard to the commissioners, who havo been criticised, we beleive they conducted themselves throughout with fairness. In accepting the withdrawals they were acting simply in the line of duty. Every signature to that list demanded that it be stricken from the Sleepy Eye list and the commissioners were amply justified in their decision to recognize the same. No partiality was shown in dealing with the names and if any one doubts it the actions of the commissioners are public property and there is chance for redress. The withdrawal was a surprise to the people of Sleepy Eye and they had no idea of its magnitude. It at once accomplished their defeat and so sudden as to shock, but they could hardly expect anything different That the county seat should remain at New Ulm is natural and the will of the people was so expressed. The citizens of Sleepy Eye deserve credit for the strong effort made to secure the realization of their hopes but as it is out of the question we hope for the good of the county that the struggle is now at an end.
