LETTER FROM CORYOON.School MeclIngs-l*ol»tilt;»l Diving —Logrolling nml ('uucussiitg — X« Dult'Katcs lor B. Biiikcrii.Corre3ioudeiiccof the New Albany ledger.Oorypon, Ind., Aug. 13th, 1872. Emtoks Leik;eu: On last Wednesday, the 7th inst., a “basket picnic and school celebra. tion” was held at Crisp’s Cross Roads, seven miles south of Cory don. It svas a mixed afiair, the committees being about one half white, and the other colored, the attendance was likewise mixed and numbered about 300persons.Hon. T. C. Slaughter, Radical candidate for the State Legislature first took the stand and delivered one of those bitter, passionate speeches, which is characteristic of the man. At the conclusion of Mr. Slaughter’s political speech to a school meeting, the Rev. T. G. Beharrell, pastor of the M. JE. Church at this place took the stand and commenced by telling Ids audience that he did not intend to make a political speech as Mr. S., had done, that it was a school celebration, and that politics was out of place there, and that it was not his business to make political speeches. But judge of the surprise of his audience, when, as we are informed, he soon descended into the flirty, filthy pool of politics, telling his audienee, and especially the colored portion thereof, that “Mr. Greeley was an erratic, eccentric, wavering, unstable and unreliable man, and not a fit person to fill the high office of President, but that the)' should vote for General Grant, who was ant is their firm, true and tried friend.”By thtR little |ierformance of the Reverenc gentleman, he is now regarded by the people of this town and county, who had learnet to regard him so highly for his manly course in the past, as one of a class of the most dangerous men to society—political preachers. We do regret exceedingly the fall of Mr. Beharrell, we liked him, and htf had given evidence of his devotion to the cause of the Master; we feel that it will be a severe blow to the cause of Christianity and especially to Mr. B.’s church. Mr. Beharrell was regarded as one of the ablest divines in ihis conference, and it is indeed a pity that a man of his talents should so far forget his high calling as to lower hiinsely down into the dirty, seath-ing, boiling caldron of politics. Are there no more faithful followers of our L6rd? His attending and addressing the meeting above referred to, might have been excusable, hat he not made a political speech, as it was ostensibly called as a “school celebration,” but we observe that his name is used (whether by In's consent, we know not) as one of the speakers at a “Grand Basket Picnic and Political Celebration” to be held at Zenor’s Sulphur well, on the 15th mst. If he attends and addresses that meeting, there will then be no excuse for his conduct, as he must know that it will be a political meeting, n.- TA W VavIm. the Radical candidate
