CHICAGO (AP)—A_ Galesburg, Ill., lawyer whose tangled finan cial affairs are under investiga tion by federal and state authori ties has been admitted to a ment al hospital. The lawyer, Arthur Stickell, was admitted to the East Moline State Hospital Monday. An emergency order sending Stickell to the hos pital was issued by the County Court at Rock Island on petition of Stickell’s wife, Julia. Court officials said the emer gency order did not commit ‘Stickell to the institution, He is’ under observation and a further hearing must be held either to commit or release him. Didn’t Appear Stickell failed Monday to keep two scheduled court appearances. In the first, before U.S. Com missioner C. §. Bentley Pike, Stickell was to have appeared for a preliminary hearing on a charge of interstate transportation of fraudulent checks. The complaint, issued in Denver a week ago, accused him of trans porting two checks totaling $93,000 drawn on the Byers State Bank of Byers, Colo. The complaint said the checks were authorized by Edward Johnson of Denver, whom Stickell and other purchasers of the bank had installed Aug. 2 as president. Galesburg Appearance In the other court appearance, Stickell was to have answered a contempt citation before Judge Daniel Roberts of Knox County Circuit Court in Galesburg in con nnection with a charge that he fail ed to provide information to a plaintiff in a suit involving his executor status in a $93,000 estate. The First Christian Church of Monmouth, Il., filed the complaint as beneficiary under the will of the late Clara Beacham Swanson. It sought the removal of Stickell as executor.
