F-16 has new roleGENTHJE AFS, Ohio (AFNS) — The Air Force’s first operational F-16 Fighting Falcon has a new mission. It will go with Air Force orientation group crews to help tell the story of the Air Force.Ceremonies at Gentile marked a new beginning for the historic F-16, the same day the Air Force accepted its 1,000th production Fighting Falcon from the contractor.AFOG’s display F-16 was relieved of its flying duties in the summer of 1962 at Edwards AFB, Calif. The aircraft has served as a flying testbed since it was built and rolled out in 1976. Ten months of intensive rebuilding and restoration have changed the orientation group’s F-16 into an aircraft that can bequickly assembled, disassembled and transportedon two flatbed trailers.
