Vehicles and people were too thick to be stirred with a stick Tuesday at Mall de las Aguilas as the public turned out in mobs to welcome the new Wal-Mart to town. Area residents joined the local residents in shopping for many Grand Opening specials. At 4:30 p m. Tuesday, a survey by two NEWS GUIDE reporters revealed that vehicles with U. S. license plates numbered 126 and those with Mexico plates numbered only 15. These figures mean only 10.6 percent of the vehicles came from Mexico while a whopping 89.4 percent came from the U.S., thus indicating that Eagle Pass residents will keep their shopping dollars at home if merchants provide enticing facilities, good prices and open-arms attitudes. Several local business skeptics now predict that the moll stores will do o booming business despite the peso devaluation when it officially opens in October. Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. a smaller survey showed that the percentages were about the same with only 11.1 percent from Mexico and 88.9 percent from the U. S. In the meantime, the Wal-Mart store is experiencing a heavy flow of shoppers in its well-stock mall location. Please see related ribbon-cutting photo on page 1C and the cheerleading photo on page 5A.
