Harry F. Welch, Voice of Popeye Dies, at 74BLOWING ROCK, N.C. (UPI) — Harry Foster Welch, the voice of the cartoon character “Popeye the Sailor Man’’ for almost *10 years, died Thursday at the age of 74.Welch, who lived here since he retired five years ago, died at Blowing Rock Hospital, where he had been in declining health for about a month.Welch began his career as the voice of the pipe-chomping, spinach-eating Popeye in 1927. C. C. Se-gar, creator of Popeye, picked him to imitate the character.W e lch also did the voices of “Brutus,” the villain of the Popeye series, and of “Olive Oil,”Popeye’s girl friend, in the King Features Syndicate Inc. Cartoon.Though in retirement, Welch would still occasionally don a blue sailor’s suit and stick a corncob pipe in his mouth to do Popeye imitations for area children until his illness.Known as “the manwith 1000 voices,” Welch claimed to be able to imitate anything that made noise.
