Tundra Telephone Co,will hiirv 20,000 feet of cable nee essnry to connect the village andconstruction camps with the long lines of the Distant Early Warning System.No OperatorsWhen the system becomes operational. a person in Key West Florida if he knows the telephone number of a Barrow resident will be able to dial him directly without going through any operators.The reverse will not be the case, for some time at least, until the Alaska Communications System becomes prepared for direct dialing.The Tundra Telephone official promised when the Barrow system became operational later this year, Tundra Times will be one of the first places called—free of charge.Ditto also said his company was negotiating with several villages for installing telephone systems but because of competition, he declined to name them specifically.Wireless SystemHe did say that he was negotiating with state and federal government agencies to set up a wireless radio-telephone system for the villages in a 1 DO-mile radius of Bethel, Under the proposed system, villages would be able to punch digits and connect with Bethel numbers and punch other digits to connect directly with a long distance operator in Anchorage.The Bethel Telephone system was started on July 6, 1961 with 60 subscribers; today it has 200. According to the mayor of Bethel, the town has not one thing to complainabout the service. During a flood at Bethel last year, trouble was experienced by only about three usersand people were able to communicate although homes were flooded and transportation was only by boat.The McGrath system which wasstarted last year has 40 subscribers and the Unalakleet system will start tomorrow with GO subscribers. Kotzebue's telephone system is part of th? Trans-Alaska network and Nome's system is privately owned.No Collection ProblemAccording to Ditto, Tundra Telephone Co. is very pleased with operations so far. ‘The amazing thing is we don’t have the bill collection problems that big cities have,Ditto for eleven years worked for the Bell Telephone Co.. then worked as operations and maintenance superintendent for the last 18 DEW Line stations stretched across Canada. then for a year was residentengineer at Elmendorf Air Force Base before deciding to go into business for himself.Katherine ChukanWeds Melvin BrownMelvin Brown and Katherine Chukan. daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Gordon McCormick were marired at Naknek, Alaska, on August 15, 1963. The wedding reception was held on Thursday, August 15. at eight o'clock p.m. in the Naknek Hotel.Melvin is the son of a well-known teacher. Mrs, Emily Ivanoff Brown.Katherine attended high school at the Sheldon Jackson Junior College in Sitka, and Melvin graduated from Mt, Edgecumbe High School,Both were students at the University of Alaska.
