“The Acquittal” and “Going Up,” Both Billed’ at the Empire, Withdrawn—No Cancel lations at the Writing as Yet. The actors sirke, which has turned Broadway on end for the last ten days, today made its influence hit am Syracuse. Two of the three shows scheduled at the Empire theater here between now and early September have been cancelled. The reason given for the cancellations is that the managers cannot secure actors to produce the plays. The cancelled plays are “The Ac quital,” which was to open fits sea son on the road in Syracuse next Stand, and “Going Up, a musical comedy, which was to have been the Empire’s State fair week attraction, Both Under Cohan Harris. Both of these shows are under the management of Cohan Tarrix, who, together with the Shubert cor poration, are the heaviest hit of all managers in the present ‘strike. | George M_cCowan, senior partner of ‘Cohan Harris, ie making the most secure fight against the Actors Equity [Seseciasion of all the managers, and’ was announced that he will spend, his entre fortune, amounting to several milion dollars, to keep the, stinking actors from ever again to rename the boards. I t was for official recognition of the Equiy by the managers and accept ance of a form of contract which tthe Equity drew up that the actors fare staking. Martin's Fears Realized. Manager Francis P. V. Martin of te Empire says Today that, asif he had feared the strike might inter fere tith his season, he had not ex pected the cancellations to begin 50 ° soon. He does not know at present, whether he can secure plays to take the place of “The Acquital” and “Go ing Up on the important dates for, which they were scheduled. Between the dates made for these] two plays, “Boys Will Be Boys.” 4, comedy based on the story of the same name by Irvin $§. Cobb, is” scheduled to appear for three days' reclinmng .August 5th, Manager Marin has reserved no notice as to this play, and,believes a wil appear, her way arranged. This play is un der the management of Joseph Hart. Who is said not to have been greatly paisturbed by the strike. At the Wieting Opere nouge al though this theater is under the con trol of the Shuberts, as lessees, Man ager Frank said to say he had re ceived no cancellations to date, and that so far as he could tell all the plots scheduled for his theater would appear on the dates promised. Season Opens Labor Day , __ The Wieting season opens Labor day, September 1st, with ‘The Un known Purple.” with wis run a week. Following, for the State fair attracting, will to “The Lady in Rei and “Tumble in.” for three soays each “None of these plays is under the Shuberts management, Sir Frank said, and he does not antici pate there will be any trouble about “producing” the. The company producing “The On nknown Purple,” Mr. Frank said, will Iappear in Syracuse for its final re hearsals early next week, and he said he did not believe he would have been notified of their advent if there! Was any doubt in the fund of the producer, Roland West as to re -company playing.
