Although the elements interfered very much with the Red Cross parade Saturday afternoon, the affair was a big success and there was a big crowd on the streets as the procession moved through the city. The rain, which started about 11 o’clock and continued in varying degrees up to 1 o'clock, had the effect of keeping many machines out of the line of march, and impressed hun dreds of people with the idea that the committee would give up or postpone the affair. About 1 o'clock, however, the skies began to clear and the parade moved promptly on time. There were 154 machines in the parade, whereas 300 had been expected. Many of these were from the country and bad roads made it impossible for the drivers to reach the city in time for the parade. The line of march was long, however, and required about 30 minutes to pass a given point. There were many clever ly decorated cars and many carried banners with words of encouragement for the Red Cross and the big fund drive started Monday morning. First prize was awarded to J.M. Thatcher, proprietor of the Standard Garage. The float represented a Red Cross ambulance with a patient, physician and Red Cross nurse administering to the injured. Dr. Brundage was the admin istering physician while Mrs. Daisy McMullen played the nurse. Clair Schaffer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schaffer, was the “patient.” The float was much admired by the crowds watching the parade. The $25 prize will be turned over to the Red Cross Society by Mr. Thatcher. Another beautiful float, which was greatly admired, was the “Angel of Mercy” arranged by T.F. Snyder, of the Stillbetter Five and Ten Cent Store. The Red Cross ladies, the soldiers, mothers, various fra ternal orders and manufacturing concerns were represented by the parade, which in length, exceeded any parade ever given in Delphos. It was a big hit in spite of the threatening weather. The committee’s efforts are appreciated not only locally but by the county managers of the Red Cross drive as well. Delphos Herald, May 20, 1918
