CHURCHES’ FORUM OF THE AlfiIn the second “Churches’ Forum of the Air/’ broad cast through Station 2CH from the Waverley Metho dist Church on Sunday. 15th July, the question dis cussed was: “Should the Church be a Community Centre?”The opening speaker, Rev. Gordon Smee, Chaplab at the Children’s Court, said that in Australia a present there were more than two million person sharing homes with others—persons who should havlt; homes of their own. The desperate housing posi lion, together with other undesirable features o modem city life, is breaking up the unity of th family, resulting in increased juvenile delinquency and a generally lowered standard of community life The Church as a whole had a great responsibility to assist in overtaking this position. Mr. Smei stated that at a time of acute building shortage such as the present, a definite responsibility rest© upon the Church for the greater use of Church build ings, which up till now have had very little us during the week. He argue-d that individua churches should utilise their available buildings anlt; become Community Centres, thereby helping to mef the crying need of the community for a greater am larger community life for young and old.-¥-11 • 1 .1 n — . . .
