Captain Crabtree, lately from the Weft Indies, gives the following extraoidmary account of a Sea Serpent, the authenticity of which may be depended on* ^ “ On the 20th June Iaft, being on my pnffage from the Weft Indies, in the morning, having juft made Mount Defort iftand, ditlant nearly ten lea- iresy J fud~ denly got fight of a ferpent of an enormous fizc, fwimming on the furface of the ocean, its head elevated ahout fix or eight feet cut of water, rather prone forward. That part of the body which was-out of water I judged to be ahout thefize of a barrel in circumference, but the head larger, having fome refcmblance of a horfe’s head. According to the molt accurate computation which I made in my mind, of his length, I think it could not be lefs than from 55 to 60 feet, and perhaps longer. That part of fhe’body which was not elevated, but of which Ihad a diftindt view feveral time?, waslarger than the part out of water; thebody of a daik brown. I was within 200yards of it rear an hour, during which time, as it d((covered no inclination to moled us, my fell and the whole crew ob«» ferved it with the mmutcft attention, nor was its attention lefs fixed on us. The eye was perfcdly black, fharp and piercing. I was fo near it as to obferve clearly that there were no fins or external appen-dagi s to the body, but that its motion was by the writhing of the body like other ferpents. During the time it was with us, fcveral flocks of birds flew near* which it eyed very ciofely ; I observed in it the greate 11 agility and quicknefs of motion.”There is no doubt but this is one of the two which have been feen in thefe parts. All accounts agree refpeing their f.ze and appearance. Two of them, per* haps the fame, were Iren on the (hore of the Cr mberry iflands. but immediately took to the water on being clifcovered. Thefe are tiie firft ever feen in our feas, that we may have any account of, though they have b en feen on the coaft of Norway more than 100 feet in length.
