PUMPS DRUWXKD OUT.The Chisholm mine is flooded and closed down. The water in the main shaft gained headway Thursday of last week, and every effort was made to hold it under control, but the pumps gave out, and first one thing and then another happened to the machinery, and the watersteadily gained, until the manage- ' men decided to cease the effort to rid the mine of water. The machinery was therefore stopped, and will be given a thorough overhauling and put in first-class condition before another attempt is. tqaflg*, Two No. 10 and one No. 11 pumps are drowned. The machinery in good running order is sufficient to handle all the water that makes into the mine, and when the repair is completed no further trouble is looked for. It is supposed that the • overflow of water is from the sur-. face, draining a nearby swamp, and . that the water will gradually be-, come less until the mine becomes 1 as dry as the Clark,a short distance to the south, which has no trouble ! with its water. The shaft at the Chisholm mine has a depth of 115 feet with drifts from the bottom, and there are now 65 feet of water in the shaft. One pump is53feet under water, and when steam was turned into it Monday it started up and did its work as though perfectly free. The operation of a steam pump that distance under water sets awry several theories. Supt. Northey is ditching -the swamp and carrying the water away from the mine, which will probably prevent a second flood. The machinery will be in full repair in a short time and the work of developing the mine will then proceed with renewed vigor. Hibbing News.
