By SCOTT CANDLAND Herald Sports Writer An experienced football oberserver, while watching the Payson Lions work out under the direction of Coach Jim Durrant, commented t that the veteran Payson coach could have a team composed of the smallest, slowest and most clumsy players around and he would still come up with a successful football team. That observation is probably true,since a check of the record books will show that winning football has become a tradition in Payson. ‘This season however, should even be better than usual for the Lions because Coach Durrant has some large, fast, agile football players from which to choose a lineup. According to Coach Durrant, some of the top Lions this season will be the four co-captains, Kent Burton, Mike Howe, Darrel Stewart and Roland Weinle. Stewart is a 6-3 end who accumulated quite a bit of playing time last season as a junior while Honé is a linebacker on defense and an end on offense. He is expected to team with Weinle and Wyatt Barnett to give the Lions some especially tough linebacking on defense. Burton is a defensive back that When combined with Jerry Buys should provide the Lions with some top-notch defensive work. Offensively Coach Durrant feels that his team has the power to help improve on last year's disappointing 3-4 record. We are going to be much faster and much quicker than last year,” he commented. “We are also going to have more size so we think we are going to have a better team. ‘The key to a successful offesse is a successful quarterback and Coach Durrant feels that he has two good signal callers from which to choose. Back with some playing experience off last year's Lion team is Kent Dixon who shared the quarterbacking spot with Dan Ludwecks, a graduated Lion grid stalwart. Junior Kyle Johnson who would have received some playing time last year had he not been injured has CO-CAPTAINS FOR THE 1973 Payson Lion grid season are standing from the left Kent Burton, Mike Howe, Darrel Stewart and Roland Weinle. Giving the orders in the middle is head coach Jim Durrant. The Lions are expecting a pretty good football season this year.
