Typhoon Hits OkinawaWith 124-MPH GustsTOKYO, Aug. 15 (SS)—At 11:30 a.m. today Tokyo Weather Central said the full fury of Typhoon Grace was expected to hit close to Kadena Air Base on Okinawa. The last report said gusts of winds up to 124 miles an hour were pounding the. island.* * * * * * * jTOKYO, Aug. 15 (SS)—Okinawa was being buffeted by steady 55-miles-an-hour winds with gusts up to 85 miles an hour this morning and Tokyo Weather Central said the chances were good that TyphoonGrace would hit the Island di~ - -reetly or come close to it early this afternoon.The eye” of the storm passed 60 miles south, southeast of the island early this morning traveling northwesterly at five miles an hour. Maximum winds of 105 miles an hour were reported at its center.33-29 Superforts of the 307th Bomb Wg. based on the island fortress yesterday were- flown to Clark Field, P.I., as a precautionary measure. American residents of Okinawa, except those on duty, were confined to their typhoon-proof quarters.Helen, the second typhoon active in the Western Pacific, was 480 miles southeast of Tokyo this morning. It was traveling north northeast at seven miles an hour.A Tokyo Weather Centralspokesman said there was littledanger of Helen hitting Japan.* * *China Expecting TyphoonTAIPEH, Formosa, Aug. 15 (UP)—Typhoon “Grace,” 90 miles per hour of howling disaster, might take tons of rain to China's already flooded Yangte Valley, weather observers said.“Clear the deck” warnings to ships north of Formosa were flashed as the storm, wrlth a radius of 200 miles, was moving west northwest. The storm was expected to hit Formosa with fringe winds and then plow into the China mainland north of Shanghai.* * *Rescuers Beat StormKOBE, Japan, Aug. 15 (UP)— The 7,355-ton Philippine freighter Dona Alicia was pulled off shoals 70 miles southeast of here at high tide Friday the Coast Guard Office said.Rescue teams thus managedto beat a typhoon which ischurning up. the Pacific southof Japan, and is expected tobring winds and high wavesto the coastal areas today.* * *WEATHERCloudy today becoming partly cloudy.
