was=== We have received a letter from Mr. John ©. Wattles, at Moneka, dated July 26, 1857, in which he gives some of the de tails of his journey from this place to Mo- Treks over that Mail route and R.). R. tine spoken of by him in his speech at Ube Railroad Meeting. We take the Fiberty |) of making a fw extrete, Ha says: “The of a mail route is s0}' | (ind 80 i needed by the thi route that 2 pai ee le | to thw railroad project that of the mail| | route. eee to Hsmp~ den, down the Neosho thirty miles, is|| is well bent 1o Trilroad construction as can be fond in any part of the country. * © * On arriving at Ottumwa il ising people, learning of the proposed project, Btotetingy, entered tak the spirit of the (king and appointed ) commit tee to accompany me to help curver the ¢ route towards Hyatt.”” From Ottumwa he went to Hampden a, distance of eight miles. He describes the Neosho valley between the two plates as, being in every particular adapted to the building of a Railroad. At Hamipden a very interesting meeting was beld, the peo ple taking hold of the project with embusi asm. Mr. Ela was appointed to a con Br. Watales as we Wyat out atlas the “horseback curvey. * “From this point taking a line due east to Jefferson, we strike Fountain, Hyatt, Keokuk, MM in Kanzas, and Butler, Clinton and Versailles in Missouri, making 4 tier of towns almost in a right line from Emporia to Jefferson City—sufficiently 20, at any rate, for all practical purposes. “From Hampden to Fountain, about half- way to Hyatt, we found the country very smooth and more than usually level for a Prairie country to equal, I should think, to the most favorable portions of finois. The timber of the Neosho is still seat, and the various creeks crossed will furnish no inconsiderable amount, “3 ie distant from many about 22 mice. We arrived there ten and found friend Amy—and that is sufficient to tell you that eidend a great heart to ap preciate and a strong hand to execute.'” A meeting of the citizens was called and the subject thoroughly discussed, and a de termination expressed to assist in putting through not only the Post Route but the Railroad. A committee of three was ap pointed to confer with other communities on the route and to prepare and circulate a Memorial to Congress. Another committee of three was also appointed (a stake out a road from Hyatt to Moneka which should be the proposed mail route. It was also recommended that the vari ous towns slonge the route send delegates to is Convention to be held at Butler, Bates county, Missouri, and Moncks, Kansas, on the 1st. Wednesday in September west, to take effective steps to carry forward this movement. bedarite “A committee sent from néks towards Jefferson ¢liy to use a cursory survey of the country and converse with the people along the route and interest them in the general movement. As it equally interests them, pecuniarily and intellectu ally, it is thou, so that they will go heart and hand into the maea and thus secure i speedy complete enterpries. Tshould the various Sel settle ments along this line take efficient measures and run roads from and to each other, agi~ fate the subject, and get wpe general inter st all along. So fine, there is no Ten~ son why a Mail Route should not be estab lished here before next March, and a Rail road within three years. Yours for Pro, ‘son, JOHN 0. WATTLES.
