(PAGE TWOBOOTLEGGER HADSEATTLES ‘GOAT’t.Owned An UndergroundSystem for Manufacture of Liquors.Seattle, Wash., Aug. 14.—Logan Billingsley, bootlegger de luxe, came to Seattle with prohibition about January 1, 1916,At the end of five months he had the “goat’’ of a city containing a third of a million people. He and his business associates have been arrested seventeen times and the courts have been unable to corner him.Besides occupying columns on the front pages of the newspapers, he has caused the calling of special council meetings to devise methods of driving him from the city.He has taxed the patience of Mayor Hiram Gill to such an extent that the latter has vowed to “hound him out of town.” He has cleared $1,000 a day'' from illegal sales of liquor and landed in a jail cell on a murder charge after a policeman was killed in a fight at a Billingsley “still” in the heart of Seattle.He “fetched” along a Tennesseean’s knowledge of liquor, a moonshine reputation and a fortune derived from a scientific but illegal liquor business in Oklahoma.He came unheralded, with a determination to “clean up.” He had four brothers and a father to aid him in his work.Poor, unsuspecting Seattle, ignorant of the bootlegger, found itself as wet as the last night of the old •year when liquor flowed freely ; across its 1,000 bars. ’ For thirty days parched throats Avere quenched with a peculiar whis-;kev. Bills: gsley became a watchword and enamel-flavored alcohol rose to $ 1 a pint.Recent raids on his warehouse near the heart of the city’s business center revealed a system of trap door caches which marked the genius, of the professional.The discovery cost the life of a patrolman at the hands of Billingsley’s Japanese watchman. The murder aroused the city to a decision that the pest must go. The police feel it is impossible to convict Billingsley, but they know that his life will be made so uncomfortable that he will be glad to move,Logan Billingsley, bootlegger capitalist, several thousand dollars richer from his Seattle experience, says from his cell that he is willing to go.“It is my business,” he said with his southern accent. “I will always stick by it.
