The City of the Ooad.—A visit to St. John’s Cemetery, East Third street, will find that great improvements have been made. Last year additional ground was added and new lots tastefully laid out, together with numerous walks. Jn the centre ot the cemetery is a beautifulmound, on which stands a whit, estal, surmounted by a cross. The lots are kept in a better condition than they have been for some time, thus testifying that those who sleep beneath the silent sod are not forgotten by their friends. Among the monuments recently erected is one to the memory of little Charlie Beekley. The largest piece of ground owned by one family is the MeSherry lot and is enclosed by a fine iron railing. Among the lots that show that special care is taken of was noted the following: Dr, Smith’s, McCaffrey's, Beekley's, Francis A. Whaner’s, Eisenhauer's, James Kelley’s, Tehan’s, Dr. Boone’s, Me-Sherry’s and a number of others. The novitiate lot, wherein repose the remains of a number of former students of tbis house, and several Fathers, among whom is the B,ev. Father Mc-Elroy, attracts one for its simplicity in which the graves are marked,being simply a while wooden cross,on which is painted in black letters the name, birth and death of each. The lob is surrounded by an iron railing and shows that it is well taken care of. The superintendent is Wm. Bob-| erts and to him much credit is due j for the wav that things are kept and taken care of. It is the intention to make still further improvements in the course of time. This is as it should be, for a few years ago this “city of the ^ead” looked as though none of the friends whose remains reposed therein lived anywhere around here, and even now, be it said with regret, that there are some graves that ought to be kept better ana monuments-ought to mark their resting places, as some of the families are fully able to do it.
