Former Nebraska Educator To Dig Up History National Parks and Monuments. WASHINGTON BUREAU THE LINCOLN STAR. WASHINGTON, Aug. 13—The job of digging up the colorful history of America’s national parks and monument system on a larger scale than has been heretofore attempted has been given to Verne E. Chate lain, formerly head of the depart ment of history and other social sciences in the Nebraska state teachers college. In announcing the new appoint ment, as Director Cammerer of the national park service said that Chatelain is unusually well fitted for his new work because of his ex cee in educational work in Ne and as assistant superinten dent of the Minnesota State His torical society and editor of the Minnesota News, a research month ly. Because of his success in this work Chatelain was offered the position of department historian for the Minnesota American Legion, of which he is a member, but he could not accept due to his other duties. While Chatelain will ultimately study the history of all the national parks, his first investigations will be concerned with the national monuments, owing to their great historic or prehistoric interest. His first job will be to probe into the past of Colonial national monu ment of Virginia, where the success ful termination of the Revolutionary war will be celebrated next October on Yorktown battlefield.
