Items of Interest Concerning Central Wisconsin Men Serving in the Nation’s Armed Forces (Editor's Note: In this column will appear from time to time infor mation concerning central Wiscon sin men in the army and navy. The Tribune desires to present items concerning promotions, transfers, changes of address and other infor mation through this median. Such items will be welcomed from rela tives and friends. The information should be written out plainly and mailed to The Tribune.) : A poem composed by two Wood county men in the U. S. army has been sent to The Tribune by one of the authors, Pvt. Adam J. Czaikow ski, of Co. A. 5igt Infantry Train ing Battalion, Camp Wolters, Lexas. In a note accompanying the poem, Private Czaikowski says: “Writing to you in regard to a little piece of poetry two of us boss who are now stationed at Camp Wolters, Texas, have compos ed. We are both from Wood county and kindly ask you to pub lish it in the Tribune for us .. . I'm sure anyone who reads it will enjoy it.” The poem follows: WHERE IS THE ARMY IN TEXAS Upon the wind swept plateau And Old Camp Wolters is the spot Battling the terrible dust storms In the land that God forgot. iInto the dust with a rifle Down in the ditch with a pick Doing the work of Niggers And too damned tired to kick. Up with the cowboys and Indians Up where a man gets the blues Up near the top of a mountain And a thousand miles from you. At night the winds keep howling It's more than a man can stand Hell, no! We're not convict. We're defenders of our land. We are soldiers of Selective Service Earning our meager pay Guarding the Wall street millions For only a buck a day. We are living for tomorrow only to see our gals Hoping that when we return They're not married to our pals. No one knows we are living And no one gives a damn !Back home we are soon forgotten We've been loaned to Uncle Sam. Only one year, can we stand it? Army boys in Camp Wolters, Texas, Beavers rarely stray farther than, a hundred yards from the stream where they have made their home, fare department, recommended em ployment of a male head at the in sttution. The personnel board also extend ed the civil service tenure of its act ing director, A. J. Opstedal, until December 21. It ‘s the final extens ion allowed and unless Governor Heil makes the appointment per manent Opstedal will have to retire on that date He formerly was chief examiner of the personnel bureau.
