It clearly shows that Williams, the attorney for Merritt, the alleged Geneva bank robber, is going to attempt to make out that Cashier Schad of the bank is furnish ing money for liquor purchases and that Meritt was just a detective who was nypt to apprehend the guilty ones. Merritt claims he was trying to draw a confession from Sehad that he was the Geneva agent on the booze time between Canada and Iowa when the latter struck him. He returned the blow, Mer rit says, knocked Sehad down, and started toward the door of the bank. Shehad then jumped to his feet, leaped through a win dow and shouted “Tank Robber” in order to tray Merritt. The former Masonic City plumbing chief says he attempted a get away knowing that the people would believe $@had ’s story and it would bess for him to endeavor to explain the situa tion. Merritt claims to have been working with’ Burns detect ive agents, one thom is Sta tioned at Desnes and the other at Chicago, ‘in an effort to break up the fine from Canada. He claim that he has evidence against ‘every transport er and dealer between Minot, N. C., and Mason City. He contends that Sehad is handling the booze as Geneva disnos of 60 Cases twice a week to be surrounding towns. He claims Sehad is using the depositors’ money to pay for the booze. He is gelling it for $120 a case, Merritt Bays. It was while questioning Sehad regard ing the matter and attempting to make him confess his guilt, Mer rit claims, that the Assistant cashier siered him and the blow which knocked Schad to the floor followed. OBITUARY. Geo. W. McGrath. Tuesday evening at seven o'clock occurred the death of one of Gren ville’s best citizens, the genral mail carrier on Route No. 2, George W. Mc Grath. fis passing was not unexpected as he was very low for several days nev ertheless it comes a5 shock to his family and many friends. Death was due to Brights Disease and complications. He was first taken sick some months ago but rallied and was able to be around and attend to business matters.” He began failing about two weeks ago. Ghorte W. McGrath, ‘son of Cyrus PD, and Rachel Williams McGrath, was born ‘ell 4, 1860 at Ladiy Attens Co., Ohioana passed away at his home in Glenyilie on August, 9, 1921. John Moran, pastor of the Free Meth odiat church at Grenville, officiating. Five children were born to them, Georgia, Guy, ass, Lula and Roy, all l'ving except Guy, who died in infancy With his wife he joined the Meth odist Episcopal Church at Gordons ville shortly after their marriage, and at the time of his death he was a member of the Glenville Methodist church. He was always an active member and interested in church af fairs. Wil liams kept this sort of questioning up until County Attorney J. O. Peterson objected, and his objections were sus tained by Judge Blackmer. Then Williams grew angry and said that he would not continue unless he was given full privilege to go into detail. He also said that were other courts where he could get what he was entitled to, a Mr. McGrath engaged in the grain business in Gordonsville until the fall of 1902, when he began carrying mail on Rural Route No. 2 out of Glenvillle. The route was started on October 1, 1902 when Mr. McGrath began his du ties as carrier, and with very few ex ceptions, he or some member of his family has carried the mail on this route every day since. He was a friend to those on the route, especially to the children. The family moved to Glenville. that fall and have since made their home here. Mr. McGrath was a member of the Western Star lodge A. F. and A. M. end of the Albert Lea chapter No. 30 Royal Arch Masons. He is survived by his wife, four chil dren, Mrs. F..E. Jirsa of Waterloo, Ia. Mrs. Floyd Igon of LaPorte, Ia., and Ross and Roy of Glenville, four grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Chas. Frost of Gordonsville, and many oth er relatives, also a host of friends. In the home Mr. McGrath was a kind and loving husband and father. His last thoughts and plans were all for his family and his only regret was that he must leave them. He was a good neighbor and friend; he was especially fond of children and they m ura dored him. It was a very com mont si to see him with a number of children about him. One of his last requests was that his little friends might be allowed to look on his face after he was at rest. Mr. McGrath made all the arrange ments for his funeral, requesting Rev W. G. Anderson to officiate and pick ing out three hymns which he wished sunk Funerall'services were held Friday afternoon=at two o'clock from the M. FE. church, conducted by Rev. Ander son of the Free Methodist church. The Gordonsville choir furnished the mu sic. In term was made in State Line cemetery beside his son. The grave services were conducted by the Worshipful Master Floyd Druckenbrod of te Albert Lea lodge of Masons,
