CORRESPONDENCE. 5♦Affairs of the*♦♦County Towns. $I ♦**************************GPTPA few days sancfe I attended a “pic-nlc” on the premises of Mr- Albert Sprague? near Otsego, Muskingum county, Ohio. The W. C, T. U. of Plainfield, held the picnic- We had a♦ A ^ -g • . T ^ j q^Ljrll /- 11ciiGglorious, good time.' If these women | ?could succeed in abolishing the sa-1 .loons in our world and some how re-» J strain the curse of rum, they would j* accomplish a great good.zcvxupuad gic*i gvw- jjProm this plcn»c I went up the val-11ley of White Eyes creek to Elijah W. * Cowden, within 2 miles of Adams-*vfile. Sixty 3'ears ago I was out on j \ this road leading from Otsego to IAdamsrilie. The country up that valley has changed much since that day. .The valley of the creek has been cleared out, and is now covered with timothy meadows, and pasture ( fields- The hUl sides have lost their 1 timber and even their stumps. Wheat- j, com, and potatoes were present on |^ ^ TT’’ li % ^ — .JL jL ^ m V*»* JTa B JUevery side- I called at the residenceof some I knew long ago. Especial-. ly at the old stone residence of the j J late Caleb Baker, well known in other j years by many persons, both in Mas- i kingum and Coshocton counties, as a ■ prominent fanner, stock raiser, store • keeper and money leader- He was \ ’ noted for charging Ms neighbors 10 j -cent interest for money, and some- j iaaes he would charge 12* per cent-, |1 especial^' for small sums. He accu- j F ululated a large tract of land and had Is much chattel property when he died i, He left a second wife and seven chi!- “ iren, 4 sous and 3 daughters, among J whom his large estate was divided- z Mr- Buker was an honest man and r bated meanness. But his heirs found!out, as far as I can learn, that they jr must lose a large amount that was -tItfti11coming to the husband and parent, by iis being too lenient, and not taking sufficient surety for the money loaned. His eldest son, Bafayette, lives at the old stone house built by his father long ago. But he has built a Sue frame residence near by the j stone structure, and has left the lat- J ter and moved into the frame, rbus the old stone residence stands there forsaken and forlorn—a relic of the past. Some people'who are inclined to be-lieVehim a “hard man,5* because of the big interest he asked, will stick to it this day that his estate shrank at his death fully enough to make the lifference between the lawful interest of 6 per cent., which they think he should have asked, and had the monev wed! secured, and the 10 per . cent, he did ask without good secur- , ity.The valley'of White Eyes spreadsout in many places along the creek to quite a wide scope for such a small stream, winding its way between the everlasting hills on each side-Many of the hill slopes are quite easy to cultivate. The sulky plow and reaper can be used on them: while some are steeped and rugged. * and everlasting rocks stand out boldly.^Bnfc who knows what oceans of wealth are beneath those rugged mountains- We know that thousands of tons of coal are concealed there. ^ and perhaps millions of barrels of oil \ -Sow in subterranean vaults. {All they need is the skill of the! operator to find them. ■Iso where in all Ohio or the regions { round about do we know of a greater j i need of a railroad than in the country j between Adamsvilie and West Bafay- j ette. via Otsego and Plainfield. It; « should come and we hope it will come. \ Hundreds of tons of hay. and millions,. of bushels of coal along tnis creek *lt;I]axmot get to market for want of |nvevances- And the ’• alleys are i ipable of raising twice the hay j •hev now rai^e. and it would be pro- j uc’ed could the farmer get a market! or it. Wheat also is raised on the !LXA *•*-* ■ » '-'•V-- - , tlopes- and stock of all kinds graze on j he hili sides.
