Staff reports AZTEC — Sprint cars, hobby stocks, street stocks and novice mini sprints will comprise the program today at Aztec Speed way. The track opens at 6 p.m. with racing beginning at dusk. A large mini sprint show in Truth or Consequences will siphon the local drivers so that category will not be offered. The auto racing season begins its last month with the per formance. The Floyd Reynolds races, traditionally the closing day of the track, will be Sept. 15-16. “This will be the last year for open sprint car competition at the Floyd Reynolds,” said Jane Kesterson, co-owner of the speedway. “Next year we are go ing to a 360-cubic inch limit.” Also, dwarf cars will race Sept. 1 2 at the Speedway. Heat Races 10 Laps Mini sprints— 1, Sid Gal lagher. 2, Mark Balfour. 3, Woody Woodall. Gallagher lead all the way. Hobby stock— First heat:1, Ralph Slavey. 2, Cecilia Bruyere. 3, Duane Stanley. Slavey led all the way. Dan Simkin was in sec ond for the first lap. Simkin spun in lap four. Second heat: 1, Rick Martinez. 2, Steve Freeman. 3, Martin Smith. Freeman led for two laps. Street stock (eight laps) 1, Joey Atencio. 2, Terry Tenski. Robert Bruyere broke an axle in lap six. The axle rolled along the track after the car, bouncing up and hitting Bruyere in the shoulder. He was taken by am bulance to San Juan Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. He told Speedway officials that he plans to race this week. The race was shortened to eight laps because only two cars remained after Bruyere's accident. Trophy Dashes Four laps Hobby stock— Martin Smith. Smith drove Cecelia Bruyere's car since she went to the hospital with her husband. Novice mini sprints— Roni Rivas. Mini sprints— Woody Wood- Main Events Novice mini sprints, six laps— 1, Bud Brackney, Roni Rivas. Mini sprints, 10 laps— 1, Woody Woodall. 2, Mark Balfour. 3, Sid Gallagher. 4, Dale Walls. Woodall led all the way. Gal lagher was in second until lap seven. Hobby stock, 16 laps— 1, Steve Freeman. 2, Rick Martinez. 3, Martin Smith. 4, Dan Simkin. 5, Julian Garcia. Slavey led for the first lap when Freeman passed him because of a spin. Duane Stanley spun in lap two also. Rick Martinez and Martin Smith passed Simkin in the fourth lap. Street stock, 14 laps— 1, Joey Atencio. 2, Martin Smith. 3, Terry Tenski, Julian Garcia. Atencio led from the start. Garcia was in second in lap two. Then Smith passed him in the second lap. Tenski passed Garcia in the fourth lap. Rick Martinez drop ped out in the eighth lap. The Aztec Speedway rolls into its last month of racing this season when the drivers fire up their engines at 8 p.m. today at the dirt track just a quarter-mile north of Aztec.
