Christian DriversSome of the churches are now preaching safety in an endeavor to halt the needless slaughter on American highways. The churches are approaching the problem from a moral standpoint. The commandment, “Thou shalt not kill,’J still applies regardless of the implement used to take life. And the automobile has become one of the most lethal implements ever to be employed against mankind.Statistics collected by Travelers Insurance Co. for 1958 disclosed that 95% of the cars involved in fatalities were in good operational condition but too many of the drivers weren't.These figures also show that 43% of the fatal accidents were the result of speed while careless and reckless driving accounted for another substantial percentage of traffic deaths. This disregard of law and rights of others is a moral question as well as a legal one and some of the churches are emphasizing this. Recently there has been a discussion in Britain as to whether the Church of England would deny burial rites to drivers whose carelessness had cost them their lives on the premise they were suicidal.Said a Joliet pastor last week in a sermon onthe subject:As Christians, we know that we live in a sacramental universe. God's whole creation is a visible and tangible sign of his goodness toward us. His benefits are available to us whenever we use any of His gifts in the way He intends. Eventhe automobile can be redeemed from tragedy to joy if we use it rightly. If we remember each time we sit behind the wheel that we hold in our hands a machine which God has given us for good, we will not abuse it. If we remember that the other motorists and pedestrians, no matter how foolishly they drive or walk, are God's creatures, too, our love-our-neighbor policy will include our driving.“Many display St. Christopher Medals in theirautomobiles a good custom, and the practicecan serve a double purpose. When we look at such a medal, we are reminded of God's constant care. It can remind us, too, to pray that we may drive in such a way as always to carry Christ, and not death, to all we pass along our way.
