Forger Cashes 4Checks TuesdayWalter Roland, 32, alias Jean Corbin, alias, John Baker, formerly of Joplin, Mo. appeared before Justice of the Peace William P. Allhce Wednesday, waived preliminary hearing and was bound to the Grand Jury. He was'.returned to the county jail and bond set at $2,000* He was charged with forgery—having made and cashed a check payable to John Baker and signed by Harold Rocnfeldt and cashed same at Siref and Son clothing store.No charges have as yet been filed on his companion, Barbara Jean Corbin, 19, of Rexford, Kans, who is also in the county jail.According to Sheriff Bob Moore, the couple cheeked in at the Commercial hotel on Monday as Mr, and Mrs, Jean Corbin. On Tuesday they shopped in lt;SlenwQod presenting four checks, each for $30, all signed by Harold Roenteldt of Mineola and made payable to John Baker. In each case Roland claimed to be Mr. Baker and presented a social security card to prove it, The checks were cashed at Skog-mo's, Jamison's, Gamble's and Sir-cfs.Everything was sailing smoothly for the couple up to that time. Then completed purchases at 'Sir-ef's and departed. Then Bill Siref became suspicious of the check. He telephoned M-ineola and foundout that a young man working for Roenfeldt had quit on Monday but had been paid off in an amount of less than $10.Siref left hurriedly for Mineolaj and found out the signature on the checks had been forged. He telephoned the. information back to Wax Siref.In the meantime, the couple were departing. They called taxi-driver Bob Deacon who drove up to the Commercial hole! and loaded them in. As the taxi pulled away, the Siref family tried to stop it but were unsuccessful.Night Marshall Jim JSndiuoU in-terupted shaving to dash to the bus deport, arriving with his face half shaved and half still bewhis-keretl. Someway nr another his social security card was transferred to Ruland’s possession which he used in cashing the forged checks.Sheriff Moore said that Roland admitted to have served time in the federal penitentary at Fort Leavenworth.
