Cowboy Horo Sine# IMSThen we came upon a particularly interesting family. Morgan Gordon asked us in and politely seated us when we asked to interview him. He was rather dubious as to whether he cbuld satisfy us or not—mostly, I think, because he wanted to get back to the evening paper he had been reading. He told us that he had lived in Alpine since 1895. Mr. Gordon is a cowboy. Though 74 years old, he still works every fall. His father was a Methodist preacher.“I belong to the Big Church,” he remarked.Curious as usual, I asked him if that meant he was a Christian. He said, “Well, I like to chew tobacco and drink whiskey just like all Christians like to do, so I guess I am.”Mr. Gordon’s sons are Morgan, 15; Martin, 13; Monroe, 11; and Lewis, 5.Mrs. Gordon said that she was a Catholic. She explained that she had gone to English-speaking schools to the fourth grade, and to Spanish schools to the sixth grade. Mrs. Gordon had a very lovely voice, with a rather picturesque accent. When she told what grades her boys were in, she said, Moh-gan is in the seexth grade and Mahtin is in the fowth grade.” Mrs. Gordon attends the Catholic Church m Alpine. She has lived in Alpine for twenty years. There are at least fifty more Ne-much interested in donating part or perhaps even the entire sum if the building could be erected within the next year. These people have in mind their own' mother who is an aged Italian lady and who has always had the wish that a church be built as a memorial to her husband, her family, and herself and that she herself would, if she could, be among those present at the dedication.groes in Alpine. Of this number, seven families seem to be more-or-less permanent. The rest of them are soldier’s wives. These ~eople presented an intelligent, friendly, very poised appearance. They know that they aren’t getting a “good deal” or even a square deal” on most matters, but they are making the most of what they do get. We liked them.Qiva ywir shoos a sow loos# as llfo—oar export shoo so-building service orffl do wonders for your footwear*% PROMPT SERVICE# REASONABLE PRICES# LACES, POLISHES# BOOTS Made to OrderLAHGESBOOT SHOPMb ftm
