s j Ralph F. updike from congress, eTERRIS HAUTE, Ind., Aug. 11.— (T.N.S.)—Two pilots were dead here today the result of a sensational crash in midair between two airplanes.The dead were:Barnard “Doc” Allen, killed instantly.Arthur Foulkes who died later in St. Anthony’s hospital.The accident occurred south of the city over Davis Garden during an airplane race,Five airplanes participated in the race. They had just taken off when Allen's ship which was flying below that of Foulkes suddenly shot upward and struck the Foulkes airplane. After the crash Allen's plane, its controls apparently jammed, made a complete loop and crashed into Foulke’s plane the second time.Both ships, plunged several hundred feet to the ground. Allen was dead when removed from the wreckage.Foulkes bad a fractured skull, broken thigh, fractured hip and broken jaw. He died several hours after the accident.
