MEETS death in the river !Traffic Drowning Last Night of Clarence Schnour in the les Moines River.e 1Young A1 Ron a Dry Goods Clerk I* Sinks to Ms Death while Bath- B ing nt Mill Bridge. 1C- IThis community was greatly startled r last evening when the word was eircu- 8 lated that Clarence Schnoor had been ^ drowned in the deep water at the north c bridge of the river. After supper Mi*, t Schnoor, in company with Mai com Tracy, started for the river for a swim. ^ Meeting Earl Crane the three went to 1 the bridge Rod while Tracy and Crane f started to disrobe on the Island at the ^ south end of the bridge, Schnoor cross- * ed to the north bank.The boys on the island did not hurry 8 Into the water and when bub partially 1 undressed heard their companion call E out ‘‘Well, here goes, and started * Into the stream. He waded out till ^ suddenly he disappeared in fifteen feet 1 of water, where the bed of the river £ goes straight down. Knowing their 1 companion was not an expertswlmmer, £ the two ran across the river and secured 8 a plank which they pushed out to the v drowning man just as he was coming v up for the third time. His hand pass- * ed straight up out of the water near the plank but he was bo far gone that * he didn’t attempt to even throw his t arm over it and sank out of sight, t not to be seen again till found by the * searching party. 1It was but a few moments until help 1 wag at hand, among them being Archie 8 Bushnell who dived into the stream re- I peatedly in an endeavor to find the k young man before all hope of saving t his life was gone. It is said that Mr. t Schnoor could swim a Jittlebut through either fear or surprise he made no effort to do so. Scores of people were searching for 3 hours with poles and f hooks, finally resorting to the use of a hay rake which they dragged up and down the stream, until the body was discovered not far from the place t Id the river where the young man went ^ down. There was a strong under cur- £ rent which carried the body up stream, j_ a little nearer to the dam, which tended ( to deceive the searchers. €Clarence Schnoor has been a resident of Algona in the neighborhood lt;of two years, coming here from Mt. f Auburn, Iowa, to work in Chrischilles s Herbst’s store, wherehis half brother, t Herman Hauberg, is a valued salesman. t He was a popular young man, hav- t log won the admiration and respect of ( many of our people. Faithful and \ conscientious In his work, he had won ^ a warm place in the hearts of his era- ^ ployers. Mr. Herbst, although unable , to swim, was in the river doing all ; he could to help, along the work of , regaining the body, and when at last the remains were recovered he nearly collapsed at the thought of the young man’s death. The body was at once taken to Mr. Herbst’s home and placed in the care of undertaker Reaser. , Clarence, 19 years old, was the son of Mr, and Mrs. N. Schnoor of Mt. Auburn. The parents and sister, Stella, arrived here this morning in responseto a telephone message last night, His . brother, Herman Hauberg, is taking his vacation in the vicinity of Moline, Illinois, and has not been found up to this time.
