New Koyukuk Now on Bettles Raw— Is Exact Duplicate of Steamer Lost Howell, Bartlett Robertson Have on Upper Tanana Last Spring— a Good Proposition on No. 11, Left Work on Her Rushed. It did not take longo replace the swift little steamer Koyukuk with Limit--Will Install a Larger Plant as Soon as Possible. Good news continues to come from one exactly a duplicate of the wreck ed vessel. The new Koyukuk is al ready on her way to Bettles and has proven even a greater shallow-water boat than the original. When the Koyukuk was wrecked this spring on the upper waters of the Tanana a rush order was sent out side for a vessel to be the counter part of the last steamer. The or der was placed with the Portland firm that had built the first steamer. Having kept the original plans, it was not a difficult task for the firm to have the vessel ordered ready for delivery within a month. The vessel, after being constructed at Portland, was knocked down and shipped to St. Michael. The force at the shipyards at that place were put on orders to rush the work, so that it was July 20 when the Koy ukuk II slipped down the ways and took its place in the big fleet of the N. C. Company. When loaded with 65 tons the lit tle craft only draws 20 inches of water. She left St. Michael on July 28 with that much cargo for the Koyukuk. The Delta, which has been on the run to Bettles has been withdrawn and sent to St. Michael for cargo. Goldstream. Hardly a day passes but what some owner or layman from that creek arrives in town with a new story of good pay and more ground being opened up. Howell, Bartlett Robertson, lay men on 11 third tier, left limit, wash ed up the result of three days’ work after reaching bedrock and got 34 ounces nine pennyweight. Only three points were used in making the thaws and two of the three men were work ing on the windlass. Mr. Howell is now in town secur ing a better plant and a big outfit. He will return to his ground as soon as possible and prosecute work as rapidly as possible. After the Koyukuk supplies the Bettles station with merchandise she will work on the Tanana river in con junction with the Tanana and Delta.
